Backorders 101
What does "Backorder" mean?
Backorder items are not currently available in our warehouse, but our vendors indicate that they will again be available sometime in the future. We usually don't know when backorder items will be restocked. Some (most) items can be on backorder for just a few days; others for many months. Keep in mind that we don't charge your credit card for an item until the item ships, so there's no risk involved in placing a backorder.
The most common question we have is when will my backorder be shipped out?
For over ten years, Lingerie Place would sell nothing on backorder. If an item was out of stock, our shopping cart would simply refuse to allow a customer to place the order. This worked well in the sense that any order which was placed could be immediately shipped.
There was a problem with this system, however. We were making an erroneous assumption that our customers would not be willing to wait for a particular item. Over time, numerous emails from our customers revealed that this assumption was untrue.
Beginning in February 2007, we began allowing backorders of items. This allowed:
- customers to have first dibs on items once they came into stock.
- customers to order a larger quantity of an item then we regularly stock.
- customers to order things which we don't regularly stock, but are available exclusively for backorder (aka special order).
The difference between backorder and special order: Functionally, there is no difference between backorder and special-order items. Once you place an order for anything backorder, it is immediately ordered from relevant suppliers. Now, in some cases, the item(s) you order may already be on the way to us. In other cases, they are not.
How can I tell what is in stock and what is not?
To determine whether an item is in stock, you need only add the item to your cart. The stock status for all items in your cart will be shown on the shopping cart page.
Why are some items regularly stocked and others not?
It would be impossible to stock every size and color of each product we carry. For example, a particular swimwear top, say the Jelly Powerpad Underwire Top, comes in 14 colors and 3 sizes. Since a particular size in a particular color may never even be ordered, it is impractical to carry every size and color of every product. In order to offer a wider selection to our customers, we offer the option of backording the items we do not stock. Items are added to our regular stock based upon popularity among customers.
What does this mean to me?
This means that waiting for an item to come in to stock may be a fruitless effort, and placing the backorder for the item may be the fastest (or only) way to get certain uncommon items.
Fascinating reading, but ... when will my backorder be shipped?
Generally in under an hour from the time the items come in from suppliers. The part we cannot specifically predict, and have no direct control over, is the speed at which a supplier can get the items to us.
So, does my credit card get charged when I place a backorder, or when items ship?
Your credit card will not be charged for items until the items ship out.
What are the fastest/slowest suppliers to backorder?
- Chica Rica / Jelly Swimwear - This company is typically the fastest
- Elegant Moments - This company is typically fairly quick, though sometimes experiences some extended delays - especially on leather items
- Allure - Almost as fast as Elegant Moments, and very few extended delays.
- Dreamgirl - This company is "very disorganized" (their words, not ours). Dreamgirl items do tend to take longer, which is beyond our control.
- GWorld - Items from GWorld generally are in within a few days, though in some cases this may be weeks to months. GWorld is a relatively new company, and this can lead to unexpected delays on their end.
- Items from Deviant (body paints), as well as our adult section, are not available for backorder at all, since their availability from suppliers changes too quickly.
What if I'm ordering a number of items, only some of which are backordered, and I want the in stock items shipped right away?
In this case, you may place two orders: One for the backordered items, and the other for the in stock items. This way, you won't need to wait for the in stock items, as they'll ship right away.
Can I split-ship an existing order to get the in-stock items more quickly?
You may inform us by email if you wish to do this. This is most applicable on very large orders (we get many $1000+ orders), which can be shipped in batches. As mentioned above, we do not split-ship a single order by default, in order to avoid charging additional shipping charges to our customers.
What you, our valued customers, have to say:
| I received my order some time ago and was delighted with the short shipping time. |
